When the winter season takes its yearly sabbatical and spring takes over, you may be tempted to ignore the mundane to take in the longer days and warmer weather.
However, if you don’t give your property the attention it deserves, it can create headache-worthy issues down the line that will eat up much more of your free time than simple home maintenance tasks.
So, if you want to enjoy the spring season and your home at the same time, you’ll want to prioritize some easy yet vital property maintenance jobs.
Interior Maintenance
A few different areas of your interior deserve some attention this spring season. First, you’ll want to check all the air filters, furnace, and hood fan. To ensure they’ll run smoothly, clean or replace the filters monthly or as needed to ensure proper air filtration. Both your property and your lungs will thank you for it.
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should also be tested when the spring season rolls in, and if needed, fresh batteries should be added. You can also inspect your hose valves and reopen the water valves inside the home once the freezing risk is gone.
Check your doors, windows, and garage doors for any issues, and address them now so you won’t spend the beautiful days of spring dealing with problems. That means lubricating door tracks, rollers, and hinges in the garage and ensuring that your windows, screens, and doors are all in good condition. If anything is amiss, you can replace them and still have time to smell the roses.
Exterior Maintenance
Once you’ve taken care of everything inside your home, you'll want to move it outside. You can start the exterior home maintenance by inspecting everything for winter damage. Look at your roof, eavestroughs, electric fixtures, window wells, and wall vents.
Snow and ice can do a number on all of these things, and it’s essential to ensure they’re still in good working condition. If they’re not, you can tackle each task one by one by addressing your specific issue.
If there isn’t any damage, you can do the more minor yet equally important task of clearing debris from these areas, especially outside wall vents and eavestroughs, tightening up any loose bolts or wires in electric fixtures, and cleaning out your window wells of any leftover debris.
It’s not yet time to use the air conditioner, but once the snow and ice have made their exit, it's a good idea to ensure that it hasn’t been damaged, remove debris from the coils, and do a temperature check to make sure it’s working.
You can also start fertilizing your lawn and trees, removing old leaves and other fall remnants, and applying lawn seed to any bare patches of grass.
Special Considerations
If you have a sump pump, you’ll want to ensure it’s running correctly and you can do this by checking that the discharge pump is properly connected and the water is running away from your foundation.
If you have a pool, you can also start cleaning the pool filter, removing leaves or other debris, checking your pool liner for damage, and picking a date for a professional pool opening service.
Once you’ve tackled all the maintenance tasks around your property, you’ll be free and clear to enjoy the spring season without having to deal with any problems that could cost you a lot more time, energy, and money in the long run.
